By his teenage years his interest had expanded to folk, rock, blues and indie. He began to teach himself guitar which opened up a whole new world, branching into songwriting and developing his ear by working out melodies from the radio.

He went on to complete a B.A. and later an M.A. in Music, all the while balancing his love for classical and choral styles with more modern genres. He is as comfortable as an orchestral player or a choral conductor as he is in a band and this melting pot of genres forms the basis of his own original compositions.

As a live musician, Fintan has performed in countless settings and styles. He has played with a number of local bands over the years, ranging from singer/songwriter duos to 6-piece groups and everything in between.

He has been involved in several record releases as both a singer, arranger and instrumentalist. His background in choral and orchestral music heavily influences his own style, building multiple layers to create a unique brand of atmospheric alternative rock.

The Munster Express - The Soundcheck

Adam Doheny interviews Fintan Scanlon, 25/06/2024

Fintan Scanlon is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter from Waterford.

You may be familiar with the name; Fintan had a career as a classical musician in his 20s and 30s, playing both violin and piano.

He admits he was always “walking two lines” in his 20s—he always loved writing music—but didn’t have the freedom to prioritise original music over his career.

Hotpress - New Irish Songs to Hear This Week

“Work in Progress” review, 14/04/2023

The title track from his new EP (which arrived on April 1st) sees the multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer from Waterford embracing nostalgic rock, country songwriting and self-reflection. "It's not my battle to fight," he belts. "Wait until it's over / Before you speak your mind / Just stop, stop and think it over / Before you act...'Cause I'm gone / I'm leaving my troubles behind”. Involved in music professionally for over 20 years, Fintan’s background lies in choral and orchestral music mixed with a love of rock, blues and folk. He’s managed to create a unique brand of guitar driven rock for himself, as heard on the new project.

HUGS 24/7 Radio, The HUGS Music Review

"War Dog” review by George Guchow, 12/01/2023

The dreamy opening of Waterford, Ireland’s Fintan Scanlon’s “War Dog” belies the heavy depth of the lyrics and ethereal feeling of the music. And once the first verse is over, you’ll hear his potent voice explode into the chorus, emphasising his main thoughts of the song. It’s an interesting song in that it has no drums other than a kick, or at least drums in the way we’re used to hearing them in a song. And it certainly feels eerie and different than most songs that you hear. But at the same time, “War Dog” is intriguing, engaging, and takes hold of you.
